IL-18 serum concentration is markedly elevated in acute EBV infection and can serve as a marker for disease severity.

چکیده
Epstein Barr virus (EBV)-related diseases encompass both acute infections that result in acute infectious mononucleosis and chronic infections that result in lymphoproliferative malignant diseases. While classical inflammatory parameters such as C-reactive protein (CRP) have proven their usefulness during bacterial and fungal infections, they are often low and nondiscriminatory in viral infections. Here, we show that IL-18 is markedly elevated during acute EBV infections and EBV-associated diseases, while ferritin concentrations are also elevated during acute EBV infection and correlate with IL-18. Therefore, IL-18 and ferritin may represent infection markers for viral infections such as EBV, similar to CRP for bacterial infections.

Evaluation of IL-17 and IL-10 Production in Infectious Mononucleosis in EBV Patients
Epstein–Barr virus is primarily the cause of acute infectious mononucleosis and can also cause lymphoma and autoimmune diseases. Th17 cells, which are a unique subset of ThCD4+ cells, direct the infection toward inflammation through production of inflammatory cytokine IL-17. In contrast, Treg Foxp3 cells inhibit inflammation through secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, leading to chro...
متن کاملبررسی غلظت سرمی و ادراری اینترلوکین-6 (IL-6) در کودکان مبتلا به عفونت دستگاه ادراری: افتراق پیلونفریت از سیستیت حاد
Background & Aim: Pyelonephritis is one of the most serious and common infectious diseases in children. Its renal infection and scarring is the leading cause of end stage renal disease (ESRD) in some parts of the world including Iran. Serum and urinary levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) have been reported to be high in acute pyelonephritis by some of the previous studies. This study was conduct...
متن کاملنقش اینترلوکین-18 و پذیرنده اینترلوکین-2 در بیماری حاد پیوند علیه میزبان پس از پیوند مغز استخوان
Background: Graft-versus-host disease is one of the major complications after allogenic bone marrow transplantation, but it is not easy to anticipate the onset. Cytokines released by type 1 T-helper cells are thought to play a pivotal role in acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD). The ability to predict the likely occurrence of graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD) after BMT would be extremely val...
متن کاملSerum Levels of Sialic Acid and Neuraminidase Activity in Cardiovascular, Diabetic and Diabetic Retinopathy Patients
Background: Sialic acid is a component of serum that is elevated in diseases such as diabetes and certain malignancies. The normal range of SSA concentration and serum neuraminidase activity in different populations are varied, probably due to racial differences. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to obtain the average SSA concentration and serum neuraminidase activity, in an Iran...
متن کاملIL-6/IL-10 Ratio as A Prognostic and Predictive Marker of the Severity of Inherited Epidermolysis Bullosa
Background: Recent studies have shown that cytokines have an important role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases and can be used as prognostic markers. Objective: To evaluate the IL-6/IL-10 ratio in patients with Inherited Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) as a prognostic marker. Methods: Serum levels of IL-6 and IL-10 were measured in 13 patients with recessive dystrophic EB (RDEB) as well as...
